<click here for version 3.X instructions> CuteFTP is an easy and powerful application. Customers can download shareware versions of this program at www.tucows.com or www.download.com. The shareware continues to work after 30 days but it will only allow single file transfers after the 30 day expiration. You will not be able to drag & drop entire directories after 30 days without registering the software or hacking it. Just close the "nuisance screen" to use the program after 30 days. Open CuteFTP and go through the "nuisance screen" if necessary. The top window shows session activity. The left window shows the initial remote directory designated for your computer. That window defaults to the GlobalScape folder. Most people prefer to set that to their desktop. The right window shows the contents of the your ftp directory. The bottom window shows the "queue" of documents waiting to be uploaded to your ftp directory on your ISP's computer or downloaded from the ISP to your computer. Click the FTP menu (as shown below) to open the Site Manager. <next>
The screen below is a typical Site Manager with one ftp connection named "dougstr" already setup in the boxes on the right. Click the "add site" button to create a new directory setup. Click the "edit site" button to reconfigure an already setup directory. The main differences from Version 3.X of CuteFTP are (1) the site manager has you setup the username and ftp host address in the main site manager screen and (2) the initial remote directory is setup in a background screen. (stupid changes) Click the "new" button to setup a new directory. Click the "edit" button to reconfigure an ftp setup. The site label would best be filled with the directory name. The host address is ftp.ispname.com or an IP address such as 209.210.176.6 or something similar. You also need to set the username and password in this screen. If you don't know your "host address" then contact the web support group at your ISP to get that information.
The "edit" button will give you the following screen. You don't need to worry about the second tab. Set the "default remote directory" to your address such as /mypage/dougstr in the example below. Another common naming scheme is /ispnameusers/username. There will always be a beginning slash. Leave everything else at the default settings or use the default settings pictured below. Contact the web support group at your ISP if you don't know your directory address on their main web computer. <next tab>
Here is the second tab just in case you are morbidly curious. <next>
Click "OK" and then hit the connect button to login to that ftp directory. A successful logon will result in the screen below. <next>
If your ftp contents folder (box on the right) contains a whole bunch of strange directories (example pictured below) then the initial remote directory is improperly configured. It should be /whateverispusers/username with a slash / at the beginning but no slash / in between whateverisp and users. Also, there should not be any "www" in there. <next>
If the site manager is correctly configured but you still can't log in with your username and password then you will need to call the web support or domain support at your ISP. <return to top> <cuteFTP 3X screen shots> <windows home page> |
