Configuring A DSL Connection

You can purchase a DSL (digital subscriber line) from your telephone company (and some ISPs) to connect to the internet. DSL connections range from 128 kbps (twice as fast as a 56k modem) to 1.1 mbps (roughly 20 times as fast as a regular modem connection). Unfortunately, DSL isn't available in most areas but it is quickly becoming available. Contact your ISP for information about DSL availability in your city.

You don't use a modem for a DSL connection. You use a DSL "router" to make the connection. Different DSL systems can use different DSL routers so you will need to contact your telephone company or ISP to see which one to use. Here are the setup instructions for the most commonly used DSL routers:

Note: You need to be setup for "bridging mode" in order to connect multiple computers to a single DSL connection. This can get a little complicated. Fortunately, setting up a single computer to a DSL connection is fairly simple because "PPP mode" is much easier to setup.
