This page covers some additional things called "preferences" that you can customize in Outlook Express. Two of them are particularly popular. You can set your "font" which is the print style of the letters in your messages. This is done in the general tab. You can also setup Outlook Express to notify you when you get new messages in the notification tab. Just remember that you need to be connected to the internet and Outlook Express must be running in order to get those notifications.

The edit menu is where you set your "preferences" for e-mail. These are your basic settings. You also have a variety of other options as you can see below. Click the edit menu and choose preferences as shown below. <next: preferences>

General Tab: The preferences window has a variety of options and tabs starting with the "general" tab shown below. They generally won't damage your internet connection so you can "tweak" them to suit your personal tastes. The proxies tab is the only exception. You do not want to setup a proxy connection to most ISPs. There are some companies with work related proxy setups. Contact your system administrator at work if you are connecting to a secured work related mail system.

Read Tab: This is where you determine how long a message is viewed before it gets marked as read by the program. <next: compose tab> <display tab> <proxies tab> <notification tab> <return to top>

Compose Tab: This section has some interesting options as shown below. Choose what you like.

Display Tab: More options as shown below. It is a good idea to have a checkmark in the "show attached pictures" option so that people can include pictures inside of their e-mail messages to you. <next: proxies tab> <notification tab> <return to top>

Proxies Tab: Don't setup any proxies even if you get website smut filtering! This will interfere with your e-mail. <next: notification tab> <return to top>

Notification Tab:

This tab gives you options for hearing notification sounds whenever you receive new mail or even if you didn't. You can make your new mail icon flash when you receive new mail. You can also choose whether you want to confirm every time when you delete an e-mail message.
