Outlook Express' Setup Assistant Wizard

Outlook Express has a "setup assistant" wizard that can guide you through the basic setup of your computer to do e-mail. There are actually two slightly different versions of this program. If your pictures are slightly different then don't worry. They are very similar. Any noticeable differences will be brought to your attention.

Setup Assistant: Not importing old addresses, messages, etc.

The first time that you open Outlook Express, it's "setup assistant" wizard will probably pop-up as shown below. (If not, skip to the next section.) It will also try to run if you create a new e-mail profile. You have to choose one of two primary options. The first option will "import" old messages and addresses from a prior e-mail program such as Claris E-Mailer or an older version of Outlook Express. <click here for that option> This section covers the process for creating a new e-mail profile without trying to get old messages, etc.

Choose the second option in the window below then click the little arrow to the right of the "1" in the lower right corner to continue. <next>

Note: Depending on your version of the program, you may not see this first window. In that case, you will see the following window. Also, there is a related version that is very similar. The design is slightly different but the options are the same.

Type in your name the way that you want it to appear when people receive e-mails from you. The name doesn't have to match the e-mail identity. Click the little arrow to the right of the "2" in the lower right corner to continue after you've put in your name. <next>

Here is the main variation from the other version of the setup assistant. It has a "configure account manually" option at the bottom that many people (especially computer techs) prefer to use. Click here to see that option and then you won't need the rest of the setup assistant windows. If you don't have the "configure account manually" button then continue in this Web page with the next screen.

Choose the first option and put in your e-mail address. You can setup additional e-mail accounts later. Click the arrow to the right of the "3" when you are finished. <next>

Your incoming mail server is always a "POP" server as shown below. Click the little arrow to the right of POP (in picture below) to switch to POP if it isn't already set for that. You also need to put in the mail server addresses. You can get that from your ISP. It will usually be something like mail.ispname.com in both boxes although some ISPs have the second box set as smtp.ispname.com instead of mail.ispname.com. That is unusual but possible. Click the arrow to the right of the "4" when finished. <next>

Type in your e-mail username and password. Note: This might be different than your general logon password. Also, the username and password are probably cASe SenSITive so make sure that the "caps lock" isn't on. Click the arrow to the right of the "5" when finished. <next>

It is best to make the account name match the e-mail username. This will help you to tell which account you are looking at if you have multiple e-mail accounts. You probably also want a checkmark in the "include this account" option so that the e-mail for that account will always get checked when you check your e-mail. Click the finish button and your ready for e-mail. Just remember that you need to be connected to the internet in order to send or receive e-mail.

Setup Assistant: Importing Old Messages & Addresses From An Older E-Mail Program

If you've used e-mail on this computer before then you've probably got old e-mails and address book info that you would like to bring into this new program. You can "import" that data from other e-mail programs or earlier versions of Outlook Express. Just choose the first option in the window below and then click the arrow to the right of the "1" in the lower right corner to continue. <next>

Choose the version of e-mail that you were using before then click the arrow to the right of the "2" in the lower right corner. <next>

There is a wide variety of things that you can import from the older program. However, your selection will depend upon which program you used before. Some programs (such as older versions of Outlook Express) will have more options than others. Just click in the appropriate boxes to put checkmarks next to the things that you want to get. Click the arrow to the right of the "3" when you're finished selecting what you want. <next>

Outlook Express will try to tell you what to look for in your hard disk. For example, if you are upgrading from an older version of Outlook Express then it will tell you to look for the "OE Users(s)" folder. It will generally find that for you but you may have to click the little drop-down arrow to find the program in the hard drive. E-mail programs are usually in a folder called "Internet Applications." Click the "open" button when you have found what you need. <next>

If you had multiple e-mail profiles in your old program then this screen gives you a chance to choose which one will match up to the e-mail account that you are currently setting up. Highlight that profile and then click OK. Outlook Express will import your old e-mail settings and any other data that you've decided to get.

The setup is complete.
