The main FTP (file transfer protocol) utility for Macintosh is Fetch 3.0.1. Once installed, you can find it in the Mac Hard Disk in the Internet Applications folder as shown below. You can double-click it open from there or you can create a shortcut (called an "alias") on the desktop. <next: creating a desktop shortcut>
To create a Fetch shortcut on the desktop, highlight the Fetch program in the Hard Disk's Internet Applications folder then click the file menu and choose "make alias" as shown below.
This will create an alias as shown below. Drag & drop it to the desktop. <next: configuring Fetch>
Open Fetch by double-clicking its desktop alias or the program in the Internet Applications folder of the Hard Disk. Ordinarily, Fetch will pop-up into a "new connection" window that remembers its last settings as shown below. However, the first time that you use Fetch, you will need to create that connection.
Click the file menu then choose "new connection" as shown below. This will cause the connection window to pop-up if it doesn't come up automatically.
Plug-in the ftp address, directory, username and password then click "OK" to connect. The "host" will usually be something like ftp.ispname.com and the "directory" will follow one of these formats: /mypage/username, /ispnameusers/username or /users-ispname/username. Sometimes, you may have to enter in an "IP Address" for the host such as 209.210.176.6. A successful connection will result in a screen similar to the following one. <next: moving files>
You can drag & drop files and directories directly to/from the Fetch FTP window to the desktop and vice versa.
