TCP 1.1.1 for Macintosh (Open Transport 1.1.1)

Most current ISP installations cds will load Open Transport 1.1.1 (or better) on to any Macintosh computer with an older version of their dial-up networking software. This will include TCP 1.1.1 (a/k/a Open Transport TCP). This tutorial shows you how to configure that internet protocol to connect to the internet.

You can get to the TCP settings by clicking the rainbow colored apple icon in the top left hand corner of the screen as shown below. Put your pointer over "control panels" and then scroll down to select TCP/IP.

Note: If you are unable to access or change the TCP properties then check two things: (1) Is TCP [and PPP] enabled in the Extensions Manager? (2) Is the computer "locked out" with administrative mode? Click the hyperlinks to find out.

The TCP/IP 1.1.1 window is pictured below. The "connect via" box will give you drop-down options to select any version of the PPP dialer that is installed on that Macintosh. In most cases, you will select PPP or FreePPP. This tutorial selects FreePPP but regular PPP is most common on Macs 7.6 and higher.

Set two name server addresses in the box that is named "Name server addr." Those addresses are 209.210.176.8 and 209.210.176.9.

The implicit search path domain will be your ISP's domain. For example, if your ISP is named betageek.com then your search path will be betageek.com. [Note: Don't worry if you don't have domain search path options.]

The TCP/IP options need to have TCP/IP set as "active" then click OK.

Can't Change Options? Go To Administrative Mode:

If you can't change the TCP window's PPP options then the computer's administrative mode has locked you out. Click the edit menu and choose "user mode" as shown below. <next>

Select administration mode but do NOT set a password if you can avoid that. Click OK. <next>

You can now see the TCP/IP window in administrative mode. Make sure that all of the padlock icons are unlocked like they are in the picture below. Set the "connect via" box for PPP or FreePPP. Set the configure box for the "using PPP server" option. Set the DNS numbers but leave the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Router Address blank. Don't worry about the search domains.

You are now ready to configure PPP or FreePPP depending upon which selection you chose in the "connect via" window.
